Sport and Physical Education at Gisborne Secondary college is a big part of our curriculum. Students participate in Physical Education classes from year 7-9, and have the option to continue with this in senior years with the options of Health, Physical Education and Outdoor Education, all of which are offered in VCE levels. The College also offers VET Sport and Recreation. Information about these subjects are available in the subject handbooks.
Here at Gisborne Secondary College, sport includes our House activities and interschool sports. During House events, students participate in various events to get points for their House, and the House at the end of the carnival wins.
House Athletics Carnival – Students participate in events such as 100msprint, 200m sprint, 400m sprint, long jump and high jump. This is held at Melton Athletics Centre.
House Swimming Carnival – Students sign up to participate in events in the pool such as breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle and backstroke in their individual year level groups. This is held at the Gisborne Aquatic Centre.
House Cross Country Carnival – Students sign up to participate in this event, and the College sets up a course throughout Gisborne for the students to follow. This course runs from Dixon Field to Sankey Reserve (including the hill), and then back to Dixon Field. The 16-20 year old boys do an extra distance to make up the difference between 3 and 5kms. The course is challenging, and is slightly over the School Sport Victoria specifications however this holds our runners in great stead all the way through to the State Championships.
The winners of specific events in these carnivals can then go onto the Western Metro and State Competitions to represent the College! Cross Country is an event the College consistently performs well at with the College having representatives at State level constantly. The Division Athletics also is a highlight for the college, with the College in 2019 being Division Champions.
Students are also given the opportunity to participate in a number of inter-school sports including: Tennis, Cricket, Basketball, Netball, Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton and AFL, as well as various team athletics. Our interschool sports have been a great success through the years, with Netball, Australian Rules Football and Basketball consistently performing to high standards across year levels. The college has also had some success in Cricket, Badminton and Tennis in various age groups.
The college has recently updated and purchased new uniforms for all sports.
